ASTM A563M Heavy Hex Metric Nuts – Product Performance, Applications & Introduction
ASTM A563M is a standard issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials for heavy hex metric nuts, designed specifically for high‑strength structural connections, and used with metric high‑strength bolts such as ASTM A325M and A490M.
• Scope: Metric heavy hex nuts from M1.6 to M100, covering 8 property classes.
• Matching bolts: Mainly used with ASTM A325M and A490M high‑strength metric bolts.
• Dimensional standard: ASME B18.2.4.6M (Geometric tolerances for heavy hex nuts).
2.1 Material and Classes • Materials: Carbon steel, alloy steel (some grades include weathering steel). • 8 property classes: 5, 8, 8S, 8S3, 9, 10, 10S, 10S3.
◦ 5, 8, 9, 10: Generally consistent with ISO 898‑2.
◦ 8S3, 10S3: Weathering grades, with better atmospheric corrosion resistance than ordinary carbon steel, usable uncoated.
• Manufacturing: Cold/hot forging, machining; threads formed by tapping or cutting.

: Wider width across flats and greater thickness than standard hex nuts, providing higher load capacity, better slip resistance and locking performance.
